II.1.5) Short Description of the contract or purchase(s) As directed by the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, the Northern Lighthouse Board has responsibility for the superintendance and management of all lighthouses, buoys and beacons within Scottish and Manx waters. This area covers half the waters and coastline of the United Kingdom, which is subject to severe weather conditions for many months of the year. Access to each site represents a critical consideration of this contract with means of access for plant, materials and personnel ranging from fully accessible by classified road through to only accessible by ship and helicopter. The successful contractor will be required to carry out routine lighthouse painting and minor civil maintenance in accordance with accepted industry standards. It is anticipated that the contract will comprise 8 projects per annum, however this figure is subject to variation. It is intended that the Principal contractor will run the project, referring to NLB only for points of Technical Clarification, notification of progress, submission of valuations and requests for NLB ship/helicopter resources. Please note that NLB reserve the right to award the contract to more than one contractor.Painting work. Painting work of buildings. Painting and protective-coating work of structures.
